1997-2001 Chrysler Voyager Car Review

Overall Rating 3 Stars
Description
Voyager was well proven in the USA before it arrived here. It's practical, comfortable and stylish but neither as economical nor as good to drive as Espace or Sharan.

Road Test
First generation Voyager looks less van-like than some contemporary European MPVs. It's also up there with Previa and Sedona when it comes to size, so it's roomier than Galaxy/Sharan and has useful load space even with seven seats in use. Voyager works well as a people carrier, with comfortable seats and good equipment including air conditioning, electric windows and ABS even on the least expensive SE models. The LE versions are very well equipped and are more sought after. From the occupants' point of view, the only real drawback with Voyager is its sub-standard two-star NCAP rating. Keen drivers are less well rewarded. Voyager is not very agile, steering feels a bit rubbery, and cornering hard provokes body roll. The 2.0 works hard and the 2.5 TD prefers cruising to accelerating. The smooth 3.3 Auto is quite quick but mpg expectations fall to the low twenties.
Positive Points
  • Roomier than most rivals
  • Better looking than some MPVs
  • Lasting well, with excellent reliability
Negative Points
  • Below-average safety standards
  • 3.3 model has a US-style thirst
  • Other MPVs are better to drive
